The average social media manager salary in the United States is about $65,589 a year in base pay, based on 3.1k job postings on Indeed (updated September 2026). Glassdoor puts average total pay at $71,256. In the UK the average is £34,520, and freelance social media managers on Upwork charge a median of $20 an hour.

A social media manager salary depends on three things more than anything else: where you work, whether you are employed or freelance, and whether you can run paid ads, not just post content. Below we pull together the most recent public salary data for 2026, explain what each source actually measures, and show what moves pay up. If you hire social media help, the last sections compare an in-house salary with agency pricing.

All figures on this page come from public salary databases and were checked in October 2026. Each number links to its source and names the country and period it covers. Salary sites update often, so treat them as ranges, not promises.

Social media manager salary in 2026: the numbers

No single source tracks every social media manager in the world. Job boards use the salaries listed in job ads, while sites like Glassdoor use pay that employees report themselves. That is why the averages differ. Looking at several sources side by side gives a more honest picture of the typical social media manager salary.

Indeed figures are base salary only. Glassdoor's total pay includes bonuses and other cash pay, which is one reason it reads higher.

The short version: a full-time social media manager in the US usually earns somewhere between the mid-$40,000s and the low $100,000s, with most landing in the $55,000–$80,000 band. In the UK, most social media manager salaries sit between roughly £25,000 and £52,000.

Social media manager salary by city

Location still matters, even for a job that can often be done remotely. Big media and tech hubs pay more because living costs and competition for talent are higher. Here are the top-paying US cities Indeed lists for this role.

Source: Indeed, average base salary by city, United States, updated September 2026.

In the UK, Indeed shows a much flatter picture: London averages £36,969, Manchester £36,814 and Bristol £34,892 (Indeed UK, August 2026). The gap between the capital and other big cities is small for this role.

If you work remotely for a company in a high-paying city, you may be paid closer to that city's rate, but many employers now adjust pay to where the employee lives. Always ask how a remote salary is set before you accept an offer.

Salary by industry

The industry you work in can be worth as much as a promotion. Regulated and well-funded sectors tend to pay social media managers more, because one wrong post costs them more and because they usually have bigger marketing budgets. Glassdoor lists these as the top-paying industries for the role in the US:

Industry (US)Average total pay
Government & Public Administration$81,740
Information Technology$81,635
Financial Services$76,261
Insurance$75,966

Compare those numbers with the overall average of $65,589 on Indeed and you can see why moving into tech or finance is one of the fastest ways to raise a social media manager salary without changing your job title.

Freelance social media manager rates

Many social media managers do not have one employer at all. They work as freelancers or run a small agency, billing clients by the hour or by the month. On Upwork the median hourly rate is $20, with most freelancers charging between $14 and $35 an hour. That is a global marketplace, so it mixes beginners from lower-cost countries with experienced specialists.

Upwork also publishes typical monthly billing for account management. For a small business, basic management of two channels runs about $400–$2,000 a month, and each extra channel adds roughly $200–$1,500. For large businesses, the same two-channel management runs $2,500–$10,000 a month.

Example: part-time freelancer

Example math, not survey data: 3 small-business clients at $500/month each = $1,500/month, or $18,000/year before taxes and tools.

Example: full-time freelancer

Example math: 6 clients at $800/month each = $4,800/month, or $57,600/year. That is close to an employed salary, but you pay your own taxes and software.

The freelance route has a higher ceiling but a less predictable income. Your social media manager salary as a freelancer is really your number of clients times your monthly rate, minus the time you spend finding new clients. Paid ads skills are what let freelancers charge at the top of the range, because clients can see the results in leads and sales.

What drives a higher social media manager salary

Two people with the same job title can earn very different amounts. These are the factors that most often explain the gap.

Paid ads skills

Managers who can build and optimize Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn ad campaigns are tied directly to revenue. That makes them easier to justify at a higher salary than someone who only posts organic content.

Analytics and reporting

Being able to show what worked, in numbers a business owner understands, turns social media from a cost into an investment. Reporting skills are often what separate junior from senior pay.

Industry

As the Glassdoor data shows, IT, finance, insurance and government pay well above the overall average for the same role.

Location and remote policy

New York pays about $83k on Indeed against about $60k in Miami. Remote roles may follow either the company's city or yours.

Portfolio and proof

Real campaigns with real numbers beat any CV line. A portfolio with before-and-after results gives you leverage in salary talks and client pitches.

Team leadership

Glassdoor's career-path estimate runs from about $66,000 up to $199,274 a year at the most senior level. The top end is usually managing people, budgets and strategy, not posting.

How to raise your social media manager salary

Whether you are just starting out or want a raise, the path looks similar. Focus on skills that tie your work to business results, then make those results visible.

  1. Learn paid advertising properly

Get comfortable with Meta Business Manager, targeting, the Pixel and custom audiences. This is the single skill most often linked to higher pay. Knowing how much Facebook ads cost helps you set client budgets with confidence.

  2. Build a results portfolio

For each project, write down the goal, what you did and what changed: inquiries, bookings, cost per lead. Numbers make your case for you.

  3. Get a recognised certificate

A certificate will not replace experience, but it helps you pass CV screening and shows you have learned a full system, not just bits and pieces. See our guide to choosing a social media manager course.

  4. Win your first freelance clients

Upwork, LinkedIn and Fiverr let you build experience and income at the same time. Even one or two clients give you real campaigns to show.

  5. Pick a niche

Specialists in one industry, such as clinics, real estate or law firms, can charge more because they already know what works for that audience.

  6. Raise your rates on a schedule

Review your pay or rates every six to twelve months. Use your new results and the salary data on this page as your benchmark.

Social media manager salary vs hiring an agency

If you own a business, the salary question looks different. You are not asking what you could earn, but what it costs to have someone do the job well. Here is a simple comparison using the public salary data above and our own published prices.

OptionCost per yearWhat you get
In-house social media manager (US average)$65,589+Base salary only (Indeed); payroll taxes, benefits, tools and training come on top
DoSocial.me Mini$4,200$350/month: 2 posts/week, 2 platforms, content creation, paid ads campaign management
DoSocial.me Premium$9,000$750/month: 3 posts/week, 3 platforms, paid ads setup and management, retargeting
DoSocial.me Max$18,600$1,550/month: 7 posts/week, 4 platforms, aggressive paid ads management

DoSocial.me prices are from our pricing. Ad spend is a separate budget you control and is not included in either the agency fees or the salary figure.

An employee gives you someone in the office every day, which some businesses need. An agency gives you a whole team, from content to ads to reporting, for a fraction of one salary, with no long-term contract. All DoSocial.me plans are monthly, can be cancelled anytime, and come with a 30-day money-back guarantee on the service fee.

Job outlook for social media managers

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track "social media manager" as its own job. The closest category is public relations specialists, which BLS says often handle social media monitoring and responses. That group earned a median of $74,750 in May 2025, with employment projected to grow 2% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).

BLS also notes that social media is expected to create new opportunities in the field, while AI may limit some demand. In practice, routine posting is getting easier to automate, so the social media manager salary premium is moving toward strategy, paid ads and proving results. Those are the skills worth investing in now.
