Short answer

Social media management usually costs between $400 and $5,000 a month, depending on who does it and how much they do. Upwork puts basic two-channel management for a small business at $400–$2,000 a month, a 2024 survey of social media managers found an average retainer of $2,107, and an in-house hire averages $65,589 a year in US base salary. Ad spend is almost always extra.

How much does social media management cost? The honest answer is a range, because "social media management" can mean anything from two posts a week to a full team running content, ads and reporting across five platforms. This guide breaks down social media management pricing for 2026 by option: freelancer, agency or in-house. Every number links to its source.

We are an agency, so we will also show our own prices next to the market data. That way you can compare directly instead of guessing what is included.

Social media management cost in 2026: the numbers

There is no single official price list for this service. The most useful public data comes from freelance marketplaces, industry surveys and salary databases. Here is what each one says about social media management cost.

SourceFigureWhat it covers
Upwork$400–$2,000 / moBasic account management of 2 channels for a small business; each extra channel adds about $200–$1,500 (accessed Oct 2026)
Upwork$20 / hr medianFreelance social media managers, typical range $14–$35/hr, global marketplace
HeyOrca survey$2,107 / moAverage monthly retainer reported by 100+ social media managers (freelancers and agencies), survey published May 2024
HeyOrca survey$66.96 / hrAverage hourly rate across the same respondents, May 2024
WebFX$500–$5,000 / moTypical agency or freelancer range quoted by a US agency on its own pricing page
Indeed$65,589 / yrAverage US base salary for an in-house social media manager, 3.1k job postings, updated Sept 2026

The HeyOrca survey is from 2024 and is the most recent public survey of its kind we found; treat it as a guide, not a 2026 price. WebFX is an agency quoting the market, so its range is not independent survey data.

Why such different numbers? Upwork's median of $20 an hour includes many beginners from lower-cost countries, while the HeyOrca survey mostly reflects established managers in the US market. Both are real; they describe different parts of the market.

Freelancer vs agency vs in-house

The biggest factor in social media management pricing is who does the work. Each option has a different cost and a different trade-off.

Freelancer

Often the cheapest start: Upwork's small-business range is $400–$2,000 a month. You get one person, so quality depends heavily on who you hire, and holidays or sick days stop the work.

Agency

A team covers content, design, ads and reporting. Prices vary widely; the 2024 HeyOrca survey put agency retainers at roughly $1,800–$2,300 a month on average, depending on the agency's experience.

In-house hire

Someone fully focused on your brand every day. The US average base salary is $65,589 a year on Indeed, before payroll taxes, benefits, tools and training.

OptionTypical monthly costBest for
Freelancer$400–$2,000Small budgets, one or two platforms, owners who can manage the freelancer
Agency$350–$5,000Businesses that want content and ads handled without managing people
In-house≈ $5,466+Larger companies needing someone on site daily ($65,589 ÷ 12, base salary only)

Ranges combine Upwork, HeyOrca, WebFX and Indeed as described above. The agency low end reflects our own Mini plan at $350/month. For a full salary breakdown see our social media manager salary guide.

Compared with the market data above, Mini sits at the low end of what freelancers charge, while Max is still below the 2024 average retainer from the HeyOrca survey. Education and non-profit organisations get 15% off any plan.

What changes social media management pricing

Number of platforms

Each platform needs its own formats and audience. Upwork estimates each extra channel adds $200–$1,500 a month for a small business.

Posting frequency

Two posts a week and a daily presence are very different amounts of work. Frequency is usually the main difference between plan levels.

Content type

Original photos, video and Reels cost more to produce than graphics made from templates. Ask exactly what kind of content is included.

Paid ads management

Running ads well takes setup, testing and daily checks. Some agencies charge a percentage of ad spend on top of the monthly fee.

Community management

Replying to comments and messages quickly takes time every day. Not every package includes it.

Reporting and strategy

Monthly reports and a dedicated account manager are what turn posting into a measurable result.

Costs people forget to budget for

The monthly fee is rarely the full social media management cost. Before you compare quotes, check these items.

  1. Ad spend

The money you pay Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn is almost never in the management fee. See our guide to how much Facebook ads cost to plan it.

  2. Setup fees

Some agencies charge a one-time fee for onboarding, strategy or page setup. We do not charge setup fees.

  3. Contracts

A low monthly price with a 12-month contract can cost more than a higher price you can cancel. Check the minimum term.

  4. Tools and content

Stock photos, scheduling software or a photographer may be billed separately. Ask who pays for what.

How to choose the right option

  1. Write down your goal

More calls, more bookings or more online sales? The goal decides which platforms and how much ads you need.

  2. Set a total budget

Split it into the management fee and the ad spend. A great manager with no ad budget will struggle to bring new clients.

  3. Compare what is included

Line up posts per week, platforms, ads, reporting and support. Compare like with like, not just the headline price.

  4. Ask for results, not promises

Ask how they will report results and what happens if you are not happy. A money-back guarantee lowers your risk.

  5. Start month-to-month

Give any new provider two to three months, then decide based on real inquiries and bookings.

Red flags when buying social media management

Guaranteed follower numbers

Followers can be bought. Real results are inquiries, calls and sales.

No access to your accounts

You should always own your pages and ad accounts. The provider should be added as a manager.

Vague packages

"Full social media" with no numbers makes it impossible to compare or hold anyone to account.

No reporting

If nobody tells you what worked, you cannot tell whether the money is well spent.

Social media management cost: FAQ

How much does social media management cost per month?

Most businesses pay between $400 and $5,000 a month. Upwork estimates $400–$2,000 for basic two-channel management for a small business, and a 2024 HeyOrca survey found an average retainer of $2,107.

How much do social media managers charge per hour?

On Upwork the median freelance rate is $20 an hour, typically $14–$35. The 2024 HeyOrca survey reported an average of $66.96 an hour among established managers.

Is ad spend included in social media management pricing?

Usually not. The management fee covers the work; the ad budget is paid separately to the platform. At DoSocial.me you control the ad budget directly, and we recommend at least $150–$300 a month.

Is it cheaper to hire an agency or an in-house social media manager?

For most small businesses an agency is cheaper. The US average base salary is $65,589 a year before taxes and benefits, while agency plans such as ours start at $350 a month.

What should be included in a social media management package?

Look for a clear number of posts per week and platforms, content creation, paid ads management, reporting and a named contact. Anything not written down is likely not included.

Do I need a long-term contract for social media management?

Not necessarily. Many providers, including DoSocial.me, work month to month. Avoid long contracts until you have seen results.

How much does social media management cost for a small business?

A small business can start from about $350–$750 a month for a managed service, or $400–$2,000 a month with a freelancer according to Upwork, plus an ad budget.

How long before social media management shows results?

Paid ads can bring inquiries soon after launch. Organic growth is slower. Plan at least two to three months before judging any provider.
