Last checked: October 21, 2026. Written by the DoSocial.me team. We run one of the courses below, so we say so clearly and compare it on the same facts as everyone else.
Search for a social media marketing course and you get hundreds of results that look the same. Some are free videos. Some cost more than a used car. Most pages tell you every option is "the best".
This guide does something simpler. We took the 8 social media marketing courses people ask about most and put the facts side by side: price, format, length, certificate and who each course really suits. Then we tell you which social media marketing course we would pick for each goal, including when ours is not the right one.

Social media marketing courses: price compared
Price is the first filter for most people. The gap is huge: the cheapest social media marketing course is free and the most expensive costs $3,750. For the Meta program we used 5 months at $49, which is how long Coursera says it takes.
Coursera prices: $49/month per professional certificate, or Coursera Plus at $59/month or $399/year, per EduBracket's 2026 Coursera pricing guide.
Notice what the price does not tell you. The cheap options are all self-paced: nobody checks your work, and nobody tells you why your ad is not converting. The expensive options give you a strong brand name. A live social media marketing course sits in between: more expensive than videos, far cheaper than a university certificate, and the only format where a real person reviews what you make.
Each social media marketing course reviewed
Here is what each social media marketing course does well, where it falls short, and who should take it.
1. DoSocial.me Social Media Marketing Course (live, $399)
Best for: career starters who want feedback and clients
This is our course, so read this part with that in mind. It is a live social media marketing course online: 8 lessons over 4 weeks, on Google Meet, Tuesday and Thursday evenings US Eastern time. Groups are capped at 15 students. Recordings go to every registered student.
It is taught by the team that runs DoSocial, a social media agency with 8+ years of client work. The curriculum follows the actual job: audience research, content strategy and calendars, copywriting, Canva, Meta Business Manager, Facebook and Instagram ads with Pixel and Custom Audiences, analytics, client reporting, and finding clients on Upwork and LinkedIn. Each lesson ends with a practical assignment, and the course closes with a mock client strategy project.
Weak points: our certificate is not as well known as Meta's or Cornell's, and live lessons mean fixed times. If you cannot attend evenings US Eastern time, you will rely on recordings. Next cohort: January 12 to February 4, 2027. Full refund if you cancel before it starts.
2. Meta Social Media Marketing Professional Certificate (Coursera)
Best for: cheapest structured program with a big brand
Built by Meta and hosted on Coursera, this is the most popular social media marketing course online. Coursera lists 6 courses including a capstone, about 82 hours of content in total, and more than 635,000 enrolled learners with a 4.8 rating.
It covers building a presence, content, Meta Ads Manager, and measuring results. It also includes one free attempt at the Meta Digital Marketing Associate exam plus a free retake. Weak points: it is self-paced, so many people never finish, and it barely covers finding clients or working with a real business. It also focuses on Meta's own platforms.
3. HubSpot Social Media Marketing Certification (free)
Best for: testing whether you like the field
HubSpot Academy's course is free, takes about 5 hours across 10 lessons, and gives you a free certificate. It covers strategy, social listening, content, reach, an introduction to ads, and measuring ROI.
Weak points: 5 hours is an introduction, not job training. There is no hands-on ads practice and no feedback. Take it first, for free, then decide whether you want to go further.
4. Meta Certified Digital Marketing Associate (exam)
Best for: proving you know Meta ads
This is an exam, not a social media marketing course. Study material on Meta Blueprint is mostly free; the proctored exam is 60 questions in 90 minutes and costs about $99 to $150 depending on country.
Weak points: it tests knowledge, not skill. It is a good add-on after you have learned the job somewhere else, and it looks good on an Upwork or LinkedIn profile.
5. Google "From Likes to Leads" (Coursera)
Best for: people following Google's digital marketing path
About 21 hours over 5 modules, covering social strategy, engagement, analytics and paid social. It counts toward Google's Digital Marketing & E-commerce Certificate.
Weak points: it is one part of a broader marketing program, so it is lighter on social media specifically. Self-paced, no feedback.
6. Northwestern Social Media Marketing Specialization (Coursera)
Best for: strategy and theory
A 6-course series from Northwestern University with a capstone. It leans into strategy, listening, engagement and the business side of social.
Weak points: more academic than practical. Great for understanding why things work, weaker on day-to-day execution like building and running ad campaigns.
7. DMI Professional Diploma in Social Media Marketing
Best for: a recognised diploma in some markets
The Digital Marketing Institute diploma has 10 modules, about 27 hours of content, and a two-hour exam with a 60% pass mark. List price is $2,060, often discounted.
Weak points: it costs about five times more than a live course but is still self-paced. Worth it mainly if employers in your country ask for DMI by name.
8. eCornell Social Media Marketing Certificate
Best for: a university name on your CV
Six courses over 3 months at 5 to 7 hours a week, covering strategy, the purchase funnel, content, influencers, community management and measurement. The Cornell name carries weight with corporate employers.
Weak points: at $3,750, it is the most expensive social media marketing course here. For freelancers who need clients rather than a corporate job, the brand matters less than practical skills.
Want a live teacher and a small group?
$399 one-time. 8 live lessons, practical assignments, recordings and a certificate. Max 15 students. Full refund if you cancel before January 12, 2027.
How to choose a social media marketing course
Ignore the marketing words on each course page. Check these 6 things before you pay for any social media marketing course.
Does it cover paid ads in practice?
Most clients pay for results, and results usually need Meta ads. Look for hands-on work in Meta Business Manager, Pixel and audiences, not just slides about them.
Will someone review your work?
Feedback is what turns knowledge into skill. Self-paced social media marketing courses rarely offer it; live courses do.
Do you finish with something to show?
A strategy, a content calendar and a campaign you built matter more to clients than a certificate alone.
Does it teach how to get paid?
Finding clients, pricing and reporting are half the job. Most social media marketing courses skip them completely.
Will you actually finish it?
Be honest about your discipline. Fixed lesson times and a small group keep many people on track.
Is the price clear and refundable?
Prefer a one-time price with a clear refund policy over open-ended monthly billing.

Social media marketing courses: free vs paid vs live
Free courses
Best to test interest and learn vocabulary. Zero risk. But no feedback, no deadlines and little on ads or clients. HubSpot is the best free social media marketing course.
Paid self-paced
Deeper content and a known certificate at a low monthly price. You need strong discipline to finish. The Meta program on Coursera leads here.
Live small-group
A teacher, set lesson times, feedback on assignments and questions answered in real time. Costs more than videos, finishes faster. This is where our course sits.
University certificates
Strongest brand for corporate hiring. Highest price, longest time. Best if your employer will pay.
A common smart path: start with the free HubSpot social media marketing course, then take one structured course (self-paced or live), then add the Meta exam to your profile once you have run real campaigns.
What every social media marketing course should teach
Use this as a checklist when you compare course pages. A complete social media marketing course covers all eight skills below. If a course skips three or more, it is an introduction, not job training.
Audience research
Who the customer is, what they care about, and which platforms they actually use. Personas you can hand to a client.
Content strategy
Content pillars, a monthly content calendar, and how often to post on each platform.
Copywriting
Hooks, captions and calls to action that get people to comment, click or message.
Design basics
Making clean posts, carousels and stories in Canva without a designer.
Meta Business Manager
Setting up pages, ad accounts, the Pixel and user access correctly. Clients expect you to know this.
Paid ads
Ad formats, targeting, Custom Audiences, budgets, and reading which ad works and why.
Analytics and reporting
Turning numbers into a simple monthly report a business owner understands.
Finding clients
Profiles on Upwork and LinkedIn, pricing your work, and pitching your first clients.
Most free and self-paced social media marketing courses cover the first six well. The last two, reporting and finding clients, are where people get stuck after they finish. That is why we built a full week of our course around them.
Taking a social media marketing course from outside the US
Every social media marketing course in this guide is online and in English, so you can join from the UK, Canada, Australia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, the Caucasus or anywhere else. Three practical things change depending on where you live.
Time zone
Self-paced courses fit any time zone. Live courses do not. DoSocial.me lessons run Tuesday and Thursday evenings US Eastern time, which is late night in the Gulf and early morning in Australia. Recordings cover missed lessons, but check the times first.
Price in your currency
Coursera and Meta exam prices vary by country. A one-time price in US dollars, like ours at $399, stays the same wherever you pay from.
Which certificate local employers know
In corporate hiring, a Meta, Google or university name is recognised everywhere. For freelancing on Upwork, clients care more about your portfolio than the logo on your certificate.
If you plan to work with international clients from a smaller market, a social media marketing course that teaches Upwork, LinkedIn outreach and client reporting matters more than one with the biggest brand name. Local markets often pay less, so the skill of winning clients abroad is worth learning early.
Best social media marketing course by goal
| Your goal | Best pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Try it for free | HubSpot | 5 hours, free certificate |
| Lowest-cost full program | Meta on Coursera | About $245 total, Meta brand |
| Freelance and find clients | DoSocial.me live course | Covers Upwork, LinkedIn and client reporting |
| Learn with a teacher and a group | DoSocial.me live course | 8 live lessons, max 15 students |
| Manage your own business's social media | DoSocial.me or Meta on Coursera | Both teach Meta ads hands-on |
| Prove Meta ads skills | Meta Certified exam | Official Meta credential |
| Corporate marketing job | eCornell or DMI | Recognised brand names |
Business owners have one more option: train your own staff. A small team can send one employee to a live social media marketing course instead of paying an agency every month. Compare that with what social media management costs when you outsource it.
Are social media marketing courses worth it?
Yes, when the course leaves you able to do paid work. Indeed puts the average US social media manager base salary at about $64,139 a year, based on around 3,200 reported salaries. See our full breakdown in the social media manager salary guide.
For freelancers, the math is even simpler. One small client paying a few hundred dollars a month covers the cost of most social media marketing courses in the first month. The risk is not the price. The risk is paying for a course you never finish, or finishing one that never taught you to run a real campaign.
A certificate alone rarely wins work. What wins work is showing a client a clear strategy, a content plan and ad results, and explaining them in plain language. Choose the social media marketing course that makes you practise exactly that. Our social media manager course guide lists the topics every good program should include.
Social media marketing courses FAQ
What is the best social media marketing course in 2027?
It depends on your goal. HubSpot is the best free starting point, the Meta Social Media Marketing Professional Certificate on Coursera is the best low-cost self-paced program, and a live course such as DoSocial.me's 4-week, $399 social media marketing course is best if you want teacher feedback and help finding your first clients.
Is there a free social media marketing course with a certificate?
Yes. HubSpot Academy's Social Media Marketing Certification is free, takes about 5 hours and gives a free certificate. Coursera programs can be audited for free, but the certificate needs a paid subscription.
How much does a social media marketing course cost?
Prices range from free (HubSpot) to about $49 a month on Coursera, $99 to $150 for a Meta certification exam, $399 for DoSocial.me's live course, $2,060 for the DMI diploma and $3,750 for eCornell's certificate.
Which social media marketing course is best for beginners?
Beginners do best with a course that covers the full job: strategy, content, Meta ads, reporting and finding clients, with practical assignments. Self-paced options suit disciplined learners; a live small-group course suits people who want feedback and deadlines.
Is a social media marketing course worth it?
It is worth it if it ends with practical work you can show clients or employers. The average US social media manager base salary is about $64,139 a year according to Indeed, so a course that helps you land one client or job usually pays for itself.
Do employers care about social media marketing certificates?
A certificate helps you pass the first screen, but employers and clients decide based on your portfolio, results and how you talk about strategy. Choose a course that leaves you with real projects, not only a certificate.
Can I take a social media marketing course online from any country?
Yes. All courses in this comparison are online. DoSocial.me's live lessons run on Google Meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings US Eastern time, with recordings sent to every registered student.
How long does it take to learn social media marketing?
You can learn the basics in a few hours with HubSpot, the core job in 4 weeks with a structured live course, or go deeper over about 5 months with the Meta program on Coursera. Real skill then comes from practising on actual accounts.
The best social media marketing course depends on your goal. Free start: HubSpot Social Media Marketing Certification (about 5 hours).
